The Final Winding: NIVREL Says Thank You and Farewell

by Anja Hofer - 14 Sep, 2026

The German watch with a Swiss Heart is bidding farewell: after more than three decades, the Saarbrücken watch brand NIVREL will close its doors by July 2027 – in an orderly manner, on its own terms, and with a grand farewell celebration.

Saarbrücken, September 2026. Mechanical watches have a beautiful quality: they can be wound again and again – until, one day, their owner decides to gently set them aside. It is precisely this moment that the family behind the Saarbrücken watch brand NIVREL has now chosen. In July 2027, the brand will close its doors – in an orderly manner, on its own terms. Until then, the brand’s final watches will be available for purchase, and a grand farewell celebration will honour the history of NIVREL together with customers, friends and companions along the way.

A brand with two lives

The story of NIVREL does not begin in Saarbrücken, but in the Swiss Jura. In 1850, Marc and Emmanuel Didisheim founded the watch manufacture Marvin in St. Imier, which introduced the NIVREL brand in 1936. Under this name, the company produced men’s watches with chronograph and calendar complications as well as elegant ladies’ watches – until the quartz crisis of the late 1970s swept Marvin and NIVREL, like so many great names, from the market.

That the brand was granted a second life is owed to a Saarbrücken family whose roots in fine craftsmanship reach back to 1891: it was then that master goldsmith Friedrich Wilhelm Kraemer opened his jewellery and watch shop on Saarbrücken’s Bahnhofstraße. His great-grandson Gerd Hofer made a name for himself over decades in the Swiss watch industry – with Milus, Kelek, Corum and Revue-Thommen. Together with his wife Gitta, he acquired the rights to the NIVREL brand in 1993 and rebuilt production in Saarbrücken. What emerged was a company that deliberately saw itself as small and family-run – and a product that founded a genre of its own: the German watch with a Swiss heart. Swiss movement blanks of the finest quality, functionally enhanced in Germany, finished and refined by hand – built in a place whose francophile culture and proximity to France and Switzerland gave every watch something that cannot be expressed in technical specifications.

The second generation

In 2008, the sudden death of Gerd Hofer confronted the family with a decision. His daughter Anja Hofer, who holds a doctorate in economics, took over the management of the company together with her mother Gitta – with her husband Guido Grohmann at her side. Both came from a different entrepreneurial background, and running the brand long-term was never the plan. Yet family duty turned into enthusiasm, and enthusiasm into passion: the collections were expanded, the Héritage, Réplique and Plongeur editions sharpened, and with the Edition Pièce Unique came one-of-a-kind pieces uniting the watchmaker’s craft with the family’s art of goldsmithing. NIVREL consistently sought its fortune in the niche – away from the mainstream of the big luxury groups, without expensive brand ambassadors or artificial scarcity, offering honest substance at realistic prices instead. The strategy paid off: NIVREL found its collectors and devotees far beyond the region.

“NIVREL was never just a company. It was my father’s legacy, a part of our family – and, in time, our own passion. That is exactly why we want to shape this farewell the way we have always run the brand: decently, personally, and with love for detail.”

— Dr Anja Hofer, Managing Director

A farewell at the right time

As much as the niche sustained NIVREL, the family was always aware that an independent brand in the global watch market would, in the long run, need to be set up differently. Anja Hofer and Guido Grohmann deliberately chose not to take that path. Guido Grohmann left the company nine years ago and has since headed the federal association of the German jewellery and watch industry as its Managing Director. Anja Hofer, too, has for some time been working again in the profession she originally trained in. The decision to close the NIVREL chapter now is therefore not the result of a crisis, but a decision made from a position of strength – at a moment of the family’s own choosing.

“I built this brand with my husband and carried it on with my children. Now we are closing this chapter together – grateful for every single watch that has left our house, and for every person who wears one.”

— Gitta Hofer, Managing Director

What happens between now and July 2027

NIVREL’s farewell is not meant to be a quiet disappearance, but a deliberately crafted final act. Until July 2027, collectors and enthusiasts will have the opportunity to acquire the brand’s last watches – through the e-boutique at nivrel.com and at the family’s flagship store, Juwelier Kraemer, on Saarbrücken’s Bahnhofstraße. Each of these watches thus becomes, once and for all, what NIVREL always aspired to be: not a casual purchase, but a lasting value – and now also a piece of completed watchmaking history. In the course of the year, a grand farewell celebration will honour the brand’s history; the date will be announced in due course. All ongoing obligations will be met in full, and customers will receive timely information on how the maintenance and servicing of their watches will continue to be ensured.

What remains

The brand may be closing its chapter – the family story is not. Juwelier Kraemer, established in Saarbrücken in 1891 and led by Sven Hofer since 1997, continues in its fifth generation. NIVREL and Juwelier Kraemer were always a family team – two houses, one ethos. The spirit and the passion for precision and perfection in jewellery and watches live on there.

“NIVREL and Juwelier Kraemer were always a team – two houses, one family, one ethos. Our flagship store remains, and with it the passion for fine watches and jewellery that has driven our family since 1891.”

— Sven Hofer, Managing Director, Juwelier Kraemer

And the brand itself? Whether NIVREL will one day return is for the future to decide. One thing, however, its own history teaches us: this brand has come back once before. When Marvin and NIVREL disappeared from the market at the end of the 1970s, no one would have bet that a family from the Saarland would breathe new life into it two decades later. So whoever wears one of the last NIVREL watches carries not only a piece of German-Swiss watchmaking history on their wrist – but perhaps also a chapter that may one day be written on. After all, mechanical watches have a beautiful quality: they can always be wound again.
